The Author

Scott Moretti

Scott Moretti is the pen name of a California teacher and the author of Lucky to a Fault. He did not become a teacher until he was forty, after taking a decidedly indirect route to adulthood himself. For the past sixteen years, he has taught at a continuation high school, where his own history has given him patience, empathy, and a particular appreciation for second chances.

His debut, Learning the Hard Way, is the first volume of the Lucky to a Fault memoir trilogy. He continues to teach while writing Volume II, The Value in Scars, scheduled for release in Summer 2027.

The Mustang Before the Memoir

The car pictured here is Scott Moretti’s 1967 Mustang, photographed long before it became the visual thread connecting the Lucky to a Fault trilogy. It was part freedom, part identity, and part trouble—an ordinary object that came to hold an extraordinary amount of memory.

For now, this photograph stands on its own—a quiet record of the Mustang before it became part of the story, and of a young man who had no idea yet where the road would lead.

On Memory and Truth

The memories are imperfect. The consequences were real. The gratitude is undeniable. I have tried to tell the story as honestly as I can.
